DentalXChange (ClaimConnect)
Operated by EDI Health Group, Inc., d/b/a DentalXChange. ClaimConnect is a real-time dental EDI platform: 837D submission with validation as you submit, an integrated attachment service that needs no third-party software, real-time eligibility and benefits, claim status, and ERA.1 Major PMS products, including Open Dental, document direct ClaimConnect integrations.1 May fit: groups that want claims, attachments, and eligibility through one dental-focused vendor inside the PMS.Vyne Dental
Vyne combines NEA (the FastAttach attachment repository), Renaissance Electronic Services and the Tesia clearinghouse, OperaDDS, the Onederful eligibility API, and Simplifeye. It offers claims, attachments, and real-time 270/271 through one connection. The company states that it serves more than 100,000 dental providers; that figure is vendor-supplied.2 Vyne also owns NEA FastAttach. The practice uploads radiographs, perio charts, and narratives to NEA’s repository, receives an NEA number, and places that number in the claim’s remarks for the payer to retrieve.5 Because many payers instruct providers to use FastAttach by name, a group may still need it even when another vendor carries the claims. May fit: groups whose payers rely on NEA-number attachments, and groups consolidating claims, attachments, and eligibility into one contract.Optum (Change Healthcare)
The legacy Change Healthcare dental products now sit inside Optum. They include the Dental Connect provider portal and a network that the vendor has described as reaching more than 700 dental payers for eligibility and claims. Optum’s EDI network lists the 837D among its supported transactions, along with the 275, 270/271, 276/277, and 835.3 The February 2024 cyberattack showed the risk of relying on one clearinghouse. A ransomware compromise took the Change network offline for weeks, and the ADA publicized emergency funding for affected dentists.7 A DSO should keep enough cash to withstand an extended interruption, document a fallback submission path for its largest payers, and retain exportable claim data. May fit: groups already integrated through their PMS, or those with enough medical-crossover volume to prefer one network for 837D and 837P.Availity
Availity is the provider portal for many payers and accepts dental claims by SFTP, direct upload, and portal. Several Blues plans require 837D submission through Availity, including BCBS Michigan FEP dental and certain Healthy Blue plans.4 Dental claims are supported, but attachments are not part of the same flow. May fit: groups whose payer mix includes Blues plans that mandate it, and groups already using the Availity portal. The attachments rule changes this table
For decades, HIPAA did not specify an attachment transaction, which helps explain the proprietary NEA-number workflow. CMS finalized a standard on March 24, 2026 (91 FR 14350): the X12N 275 (006020X314) for transmitting attachments and the 277 RFAI for payer requests, with a compliance date of May 26, 2028.8 Ask each vendor for a written migration plan, including implementation fees, contract changes, testing dates, and any period when both workflows will run. See Dental attachments for more detail.Match the need to the option
Whoever you pick
- Hold cash reserves sized to survive several weeks with no collections
- Document a fallback path for top payers that accept direct portal submission
- Keep your data portable so the clearinghouse portal does not hold the only copy
- Ask for the SOC 2 and the incident history
